Far Yeast Barrel Aged Strong Ale Red Wine is the a 10.5% Belgian strong ale from Far Yeast Brewing Company, based in Yamanashi, Japan. It’s part of their limited edition range and can be found in both in bottles and on tap for a limited time only. Like Far Yeast Barrel Aged Strong Ale White Wine, this has been aged in wine barrels, with the focus being on red wine this time around.
Far Yeast Barrel Aged Strong Ale Red Wine Aroma and Taste
Far Yeast Barrel Aged Strong Ale Red Wine poured out a deep reddish brown colour with a large frothy white head on top that lingered before collapsing in on itself to a thin ring of bubbles. Unlike its sister beer, it had a distinct sour grape like aroma, with hints of berries coming through the rich boozy caramel aroma of the body. Hopheads would be well advised to give this a wide berth as there was nothing of note from the hops.
The body to Far Yeast Barrel Aged Strong Ale Red Wine was nowhere as dry as its sister beer. In fact, it was the opposite – bursting with fruitiness along with a slight underlying woodiness to it. The booziness was only evident once the beer had warmed up but even then, it didn’t taste like 10.5% at all. The beer finished up with a flurry of vanilla oakness to it with a slight prickly feeling.
Far Yeast Barrel Aged Strong Ale Red Wine The Bottom Line
This was the second time for me to have a wine barrel aged beer, and I liked it. Definitely pick this one over the white wine version.
