Heiwa Craft IPA is a 6% American IPA from Heiwa Brewery, based in Wakayama, Japan. It’s part of their all-year round range of beers and can be found in bottles though we’re unsure about it’s availability of on tap. At the time of writing, it’s unknown what hops went into making Heiwa Craft IPA.

Heiwa Craft IPA Aroma and Taste

Heiwa Craft IPA poured out a medium dark orange colour with a fluffy white head on top. It had a subtle citrusy lemon and grapefruit aroma with hints of pineapple from the hops, and an underlying sweet caramel nose coming through once it had warmed up. In some ways it seems that Heiwa Craft IPA is an old-school American IPA with the classic aromas going on, but then a slight buttery note came through, dragging me back to the possibility of an off-flavour having found its way in.

The bitterness gets you from the beginning, though it’s not too in-your-face like some American IPAs are. It’s smoother but don’t let that fool you as the lemon and grapefruit flavours come in too. The malt sweetness does bring some respite, bringing a caramel edge to the beer. Yet, it all seems like it’s been done before by other breweries. Heiwa Craft IPA finishes with a muted piney edge to it, and the lingering bitterness fading away.

Heiwa Craft IPA The Bottom Line

Heiwa Craft IPA isn’t a bad IPA, it’s just been done so many times, by so many others, in a better way.
