Mikawaya in Kamakura

Mikawaya Front

Love this style of architecture.

A short entry today on Mikawaya, a local sake and craft beer store located just down the road from Tsurugaoka Hachimangu shrine in Kamakura, Japan. We came across it on travels to Magnetico, which we’re still yet to get to at the time of writing. It was first opened in 1900, and it has been located at the current branch since 1923, with this building being still the same from that time.

Simple but reasonably priced.
Mikawaya Stock 2
Well kept too.

Mikawaya only has one floor but sells sake from the local area and also craft beer from the local too. On the day we went, they had beers from Sankt GallenKamakura Beer, and Shonan Beer in stock. While the range of beers is not as large as Sagamiya Liquor Store, the prices are often the same or cheaper. Moreover, the location means you don’t have to navigate the tiny streets of Komachi dori.

Mikawaya doesn’t do delivery, so you have to carry everything back with you, but if you’re in the local area, it’s a great place to pick up some limited edition bottled beers from the aforementioned breweries. They don’t have an online store either.

How to Get to Mikawaya

You can get to Kamakura by either the JR Yokosuka line or the Enoden Line from Enoshima or Fujisawa. Mikawaya is then about a five minute walk up Hachimangu Dori.
