Yamaguchi Narutaki Kogen Stout, yes I’ve decided to ignore the ji-biru part of the name, is a 5% stout from Yamaguchi Narutaki Kogen Brewery, based in Yamaguchi city. It has won the World Selection Award in 2009, aka Monde Selection, but that’s basically a pay-and-win competition for food and drink so we’ll ignore that award. Yamaguchi Narutaki Kogen Stout is part of the all-year round range and can be found in bottles and on draught.
Yamaguchi Narutaki Kogen Stout Aroma and Taste
With Yamaguchi Narutaki Kogen Stout being a mouthful to say, let’s just call it Yamaguchi Stout. It poured out a deep brown colour with an off-white, slightly brownish tinged head. There was a faint hint of chocolate to it but the woody, peaty aroma was far more interesting as it was completely unexpected along with a creamy smell too.
Where Yamaguchi Stout did well was the roasted coffee taste but with the cream, it tasted like some kind of lukewarm latte from Starbucks – it worked well but never really hit the spot. The chocolate and caramel flavours were present in the body but were strongly dulled in the aftertaste as the dry peaty flavours also came through too, sapping the moisture from the mouth.
Yamaguchi Narutaki Kogen Stout One Line Review
Yamaguchi Narutaki Kogen Stout is a bog-standard run-of-the-mill stout – if it’s cheap, then pick up a bottle else leave it on the shelf.
