Yokohama Green Citrus Pilsner : Background
Yokohama Green Citrus Pilsner is a 5% fruit beer with a pilsner base from Yokohama Beer, based in Kanagawa, Japan. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, as well as being available all-year round. Many of the small green mandarins that are thinned out during the process of growing mandarins are discarded. In an effort to make use of these precious resources, they collaborated with Akizawaen in Odawara, Kanagawa to repurpose this green mandarins into the making of this beer.

Yokohama Green Citrus Pilsner : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste
Yokohama Green Citrus Pilsner poured out a slightly hazy light straw colour with a thin layer of white head on top that left some streaks down the side of the glass.
The aroma was a pungent orange one from start to finish, but while it was pungent, it wasn’t potent – that’s to say that it wasn’t offensive nor overwhelming. Sometimes with beers that uses copious amounts of citrus fruit, the beer can have a pithy aroma but Yokohama Green Citrus Pilsner didn’t. Neither did it smell like washing-up liquid. Overall, a very pleasant fruity aroma but Yokohama Beer hadn’t forgotten about the pilsner base – there was a light floral hoppy aroma just cutting through the fruitiness as the beer warmed up.
Yokohama Green Citrus Pilsner had a slight bitterness at the beginning, with an underlying tartness from the oranges coming through to support it. The mandarins were the main flavour in the beer during drinking, though the malt sweetness cut through it, along with a slight floral hoppy flavour cutting through as it warmed up. The body was light and crisp, partly due to the mandarins, but well balanced in the back.
