West Coast Dark Crispi Boi : Background
West Coast Dark Crispi Boi is a 5% Czech amber lager from West Coast Brewing, based in Mochimune, Shizuoka. It’s part of their canned and draught line-up, with it being released at irregular times throughout the year. It’s brewed using imported Czech Slatek hops, as well as using floor malted Bohemian malts, and finally a traditional decoction mash is used to make this beer. Very different approach from West Coast Brewing who are better known for their American pale ales and IPAs.

West Coast Dark Crispi Boi : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste
West Coast Dark Crispi Boi poured out a reddish brown colour with a medium amount of frothy off-white tan coloured head. The head didn’t last long, though it did have some legs, leaving some streaks down the inside of the glass.
The aroma began with a slight caramel and toasted note being prominent throughout drinking. The Slatek hop aroma was one of floral notes, alongside a slightly more citrus nose than expected – some grapefruit and lemon were both apparent during drinking. It was rather a complex aroma on the beer and peculiar; it almost resembled something like a California common at times.
Drinking West Coast Dark Crispi Boi was as equally as interesting. Veering between sweet malt notes and floral hop flavours at times, there was a slight undertone of bitterness during drinking. It wasn’t enough to detract from the malts and hops; however, it was enough to give the beer some more dimension to it. Finally, the lightness of the body made it an easy drinking beer; something that surprised me with this amber beer as they tend to be fully on the body and more of a sipper.
West Coast Dark Crispi Boi : The Bottom Line
A definitely drinkable beer from start to finish. More please!
