Karuizawa Herbal Golden Ale is a 5% spice / golden ale from Yo-Ho Brewing Company based in Saku, Nagano. It’s part of their Karuizawa Kogen Beer lineup and is their 2026 edition of their limited series of beer. As such, this beer may be unavailable at the time of reading. The concept is 「食事と語らいのお供に」- a companion for food and conversation. The 2026 edition is apparently the first in the annual series specifically designed to complement food rather than be the star of the show. Finally, the beer was developed by a third-year brewer, Hayato Arai, with the project deliberately tied to Karuizawa’s food culture and forest environment

Karuizawa Herbal Golden Ale : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste
Karuizawa Herbal Golden Ale poured out a clean, almost transparent golden colour with a thick white head on top, consisting of medium and large bubbles. However, that head didn’t last long, and left some bubbles around the edge of the glass, with them hanging around until the end of drinking.
The aroma was certainly herbal, though without knowing what hops and adjuncts went into the making of this beer, it’s hard to know where the aromas came from. It also had a slightly woody and grassy note to the aroma, with just a smidgen of citrus notes coming through as Karuizawa Herbal Golden Ale warmed up. Finally, the malt brought a touch of sweetness to the body but not enough to detract away from the herbal aromas.
The body began with a smooth bitterness that was restrained and became a backseat to the herbal flavours found in the body. Karuizawa Herbal Golden Ale tasted clean though with no discernible off-flavours, alongside a slight woodiness to the body during drinking. As the beer warmed up, a touch of sweetness was present, but nothing really that was cloying or overly powerful.
Karuizawa Herbal Golden Ale : The Bottom Line
Karuizawa Herbal Golden Ale is a tasty little beer that, while it won’t blow your senses away, does lend itself nicely to a little drinking session during the week. I’d definitely like to try this again with some of the recommend foods.
