Hana no Onshitsu (Kannami / Shizuoka)

Hana no Onshitsu : The Bottom Line

If you’re in the area, and are not driving, and you’re really desperate for a beer, then sure, head over to Hana no Onshitsu, but you won’t be blown away by either the farm or the beer. Admittedly, I cycled here and was super tired, hot, and in need of something cold, so I probably would have drunk Abashiri Okhotsk Blue Ryuhyo Draft – that’s how thirsty I was. On the other hand, it’s a place that if you have kids, they might enjoy. The whole place is non-smoking and is also pet friendly, though your pet must be under control.

Restaurant Oratche Inside

Hana no Onshitsu : Background

Hana no Onshitsu is located on what is known as Oratche Dairy Farm – though that’s kind of a misnomer really as there are a number of animals located on the site, though the condition of the farm has seen better days to be honest. Thankfully, unlike some other, more famous animal or zoological places in Japan, the animals do have a decent amount of room to roam around in.

Hana no Onshitsu is located in the Kannami area of Shizuoka – an area which stretches from Lake Ashi in Hakone to the north, Atami to the east, Mishima to the west, and then Izunokuni in the south. It’s quite a mountainous area, so to get to Hana no Onshitsu, you either need to drive here, take the local bus, or cycle down from Lake Ashi, navigating some fast runs down. Restaurant Oratche opened in September 1997 – so they must be doing something right if they’ve been around for almost 30 years at the time of writing.

Hana no Onshitsu : Atmosphere & Interior

Hana no Onshitsu is located in what appears to be a large greenhouse – though on the day we went, the air con was pumping out lots of cold air, so it didn’t get too hot inside. There’s almost 100 seats inside, at various tables and benches, so there’s plenty of space, and the whole place is non-smoking. Moreover, you can also bring your pets inside, though they do have to be on a lead and under control.

Hana no Onshitsu : Beer & Tap Information

All the beers at Hana no Onshitsu come Izu no Kuni Beer it seems – not the best brewery by any means but like I said, on a hot day, when the beer is cold, the only thing better is free beer. There are two to four taps of the beers on, with all beers priced at ¥480 – not too bad considering you’re in the middle of nowhere. The beers come in one size, which is about 330 ml with a decent pour on top. Finally, there are some fridges where you can get bottles to takeaway.

Hana no Onshitsu : Food & Menu Information

Hana no Onshitsu does have some small snacks on sale, though with Restaurant Oratche around the corner offering up larger meals, there’s not much really besides a BBQ course, and some cakes or ice cream – perfect for kids really. The menus are all in Japanese and the prices include tax.
