Free Spirits Encinitas IPA

Free Spirits Encinitas IPA : Background

Free Spirits Encinitas IPA is a 7% hazy IPA from Free Spirits Brewing, based in Hyogo, Japan. It’s part of their regular lineup and is also available in both bottles and on draught. Free Spirits Encinitas IPA is the first hazy IPA from them, and uses four hops : Citra Cryo, Harlequin, Pineapple express, and Simcoe. Unfortunately, Pineapple express is not a strain of marijuana that has been used. Instead it’s a flavouring agent used to impart pineapple flavour.

Free Spirits Encinitas IPA : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste

Free Spirits Encinitas IPA came up a thick, hazy orange honey colour with a finger’s worth of head on top that stuck around for the whole of drinking.

The aroma was full on tropical from the get-go – lashings of different fruits came through. Mango and pineapple, some guava to support it all, and a touch of coconut as it warmed up. Free Spirits Encinitas IPA also had some light citrus notes in the back, with lemon and orange just peeking through it all. Supporting all of the hoppy flavours was a light candied malt sweetness, bringing it all together.

The body had a solid mouthfeel to it – a light stickiness with the aforementioned tropical flavours trading off blows with one another. Mango then pineapple, guava then coconut – there was a lot going on and it was all delicious. With the citrus notes bringing a slight bitterness to the beer, this beer was truly a delight to drink and though I had just the one pint, it would have been good to drink more.

Free Spirits Encinitas IPA : The Bottom Line

A fantastic hazy IPA that is worth finding out when it’s fresh.
