Kyoto Irotoridori Tart Lime IPA is a 6.5% sour IPA from Kyoto Brewing Company, based in Kyoto, Japan. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, as well as being one of three beers in their Irotoridori lineup, that focuses on using Motueka hops from New Zealand. It was the first one in the series that focuses on using Motueka hops to bring out their lime nature in terms of flavour, though the hops are often paired with some other hops to accentuate the secondary flavours, with Kyoto Irotoridori Tart Lime IPA using Riwaka and Southern Cross – also both imported from the Southern Hemisphere country.

Poured out a dull, but also striking golden, yellow colour with a big frothy head made up of a mixture of large and small bubbles.

Lime – from start to finish. But what was to be expected when you add lime juice into a beer? It wasn’t until after beginning to write this article that I found out lime juice had been used in this beer. That seems to be kind of cheating – it’s like adding steroids to the diet of someone who is already maxed out on protein powders and chicken breasts. There was a strong tart sourness on the nose, but again, that’s probably from the lime juice.

Tart on the palate, with the lime astringency coming through strong. It was pretty much one-dimensional, maybe two-dimensional, throughout drinking with the lime tartness lingering on throughout, without any real respite from it at all.

Kyoto Irotoridori Tart Lime IPA doesn’t show off the Motueka hops at all, rather, it shows off the lime juice and its flavour.
