Amakusa Sonar Beer : Background

Amakusa Sonar Beer is a brewery located in Amakusa, Kumamoto, in Kyushu. The brewery was established in March 2020 after receiving the low-malt beer license.

Amakusa Sonar Beer owner Shinya Araki is originally from Amakusa City but after graduating, he worked as a hairdresser in Tokyo, but in July 2013 he moved back from Tokyo to Kumamoto, where his parents live, because he wanted to make beer that is rooted in the local community. At the same time as he was preparing to open his brewery, in the winter of 2018, he started cultivating hops without pesticides with his father in a field of about 1,500m2 near his home.

With the motto “Make Amakusa a hop town!”, he is currently cultivating hops with Takushin High School Agriculture Department students and nursery school children in order to make hops known to local people. the field is located far from the domestic hop belt between 35 and 55 degrees north latitude, making it the westernmost hop field in Japan. In this field, they are trying to grow 15 different types of fresh hops to create unique craft beers. Moreover, they do not use any pesticides in the production of the hops.
