Yellow Beer Works : Background
Yellow Beer Works is a microbrewery found in Fukushima City, Fukushima Prefecture in 2020. It is a brewery that was started by a rice farmer in Fukushima City as a side job in addition to his farm work. The farm was setup in December 2014, called Kato Farm, a husband-and-wife team of rice farmers who are the largest in the city.
In 2009, they left their corporate jobs and took over the husband’s grandparents’ farm to become new farmers. However, soon after moving, the Tohoku Earthquake they had to pivot. Yet the farmers around us started to sell their farmland one after another. Another opportunity came in 2017, when the evacuation order was lifted in Odaka Ward, Minamisoma City, and they wondered if there was something they could do to help, so they started growing rice. Later, with a suggestion from fellow farmers, they decided to grow beer barley and hops.
After training at the Tokyo brewery Riot Beer, and after undergoing training in craft beer brewing, in August 2020, the brewery received its license to brew beer.
Using home-grown barley, hops, rice, vegetables, etc. as some of the raw materials, Yellow Beer Works produces a series of hoppy and juicy IPAs. Moreover, they try to use Fukushima grown hops in their beers where possible. In 2021, they collaborated with Black Tide Brewing in Kesennuma to develop a craft beer called “Squeezy Peach” using peaches from Fukushima Prefecture. Their concept behind the beers is “punk rock beer that makes you smile.”
In addition, in 2022 the “Yellow Beer Works Bunka-dori Store” in the centre of Fukushima City was opened while in 2023, a new brewery was setup with the aim of expanding production to more canned products to be sold direct to drinkers across Japan and also to improve sales in kegs.
