Rio Dystopia : Aroma & Taste
Rio Dystopia poured out a hazy golden yellow colour with a large amount of vibrant white head on top that left some thick, sticky white lacing down the side, yet remained throughout drinking. The aroma from Rio Dystopia started off with a gentle phenolic aroma of peaches that was combined with some slight sour funk from the yeast, something that could be found in a saison. The aromas mingled with one another until they opened up to a sweet biscuit malt aroma that became more prominent as Rio Dystopia warmed up. Moreover, there was just a touch of alcohol heat as the beer warmed up, but not enough to detract from the other aromas.
Rio Dystopia is very much a full-bodied beer, but with surprisingly light flavours. The main flavours in the body were the phenol and yeast funk that were present in the nose – two flavours that some people might not enjoy to be honest. Neither could be considered to be off flavours for this still of beer, but the combination of them in Rio Dystopia might be a tad strong. Rio Dystopia had a faint wheat-like quality to it that helped cut through the full bodied nature of the beer, and combined with the yeast funk, made this an interesting beer to drink.
Rio Dystopia : The Bottom Line
Rio Dystopia is actually a decent Belgian dubbel, though I’d like to see how it changes over time.
