Passific Moke : Aroma & Taste

Passific Moke poured out a deep ruby red colour with an ever so slightly off-white head that left some streaks down the side of the glass as the beer got drunk. The first immediate aroma to come off the beer was of course, the smokey aroma, with its woodiness also present. Once I had gotten over that aroma, then next came a light caramel aroma with just a smidgen of noble hops – nothing bold or overwhelming but mild in fact. The overall impression of Passific Moke was that it was smooth rather than an in your face smokiness – something that some rauchbiers can be.

Passific Moke began with a smooth smokey body – not really a surprise there – but it was still smooth and well rounded out, which was very nice. I do like rauchs but sometimes find the overwhelming nature of the smoke factor to be off-putting Passific Moke didn’t have any of that abrasiveness and was smooth on the palate. There was some caramel factor present but in the body, the smoke was king. There was also just a smidgen of noble hop flavour going on in the body, but the lingering smokey quality made it more of a background note.

Passific Moke : The Bottom Line

If you’re interested in getting into rauchbiers, then Passific Moke is a good starting point.
