Hop Japan Abakuma Red : Aroma & Taste

Hop Japan Abakuma Red poured out a dark reddish brown color with a reasonably large off-white head on top that clung to the side of the glass, leaving thick streaks down the side. The aroma was of an initially earthy aroma, guessing from the unknown hops that went into making the beer, and then some of the more traditional rye peppery aroma came through. Note rushing per se, but definitely more pronounced as Hop Japan Abakuma Red warmed up more and more. The malts brought a soft caramel aroma to the body, but overall, it was generally well balanced.

Hop Japan Abakuma Red started off with a smooth bitterness, that then proceeded into a peppery flavour with some caramel sweetness to support the flavours. The pepperiness was the strongest noticeable flavour, with some earthy hop coming through when the beer had warmed up somewhat.

Hop Japan Abakuma Red : The Bottom Line

Hop Japan Abakuma Red is a solid, if basic, rye IPA. If you like the style, then you could do worse than Hop Japan Abakuma Red.
