Kyoto Brewing Kan is a 6% American IPA from Kyoto Brewing Company, based in Kyoto, Japan. It’s part of their limited edition “taste” series and can be found in both cans and on draught across Japan. Kyoto Brewing Kan takes it names from “kan (甘)” which can also be read as part of “amai (甘い)” which means sweet. This beer is brewed using imported Citra, Ekuanot, Citra Cryo, Ekuanot Cryo, and Sabro hops and also contains coconut powder.
Kyoto Brewing Kan Aroma and Taste
Kyoto Brewing Kan poured out a light yellow colour with a fluffy, plump white head on top that clung to the side of the glass during drinking. In spite of Kyoto Brewing Kan having coconut powder added to it, it wasn’t a dominating aroma. In fact, the aroma off of Kyoto Brewing Kan was more of a tropical fruit profile, with pineapple and mango coming through first, with some citrusy notes of orange and lime as well. It was only when Kyoto Brewing Kan had warmed up that a silky, creamy aroma was noted, but was this from the coconut powder or my brain expecting some coconut aromas to come through having read the ingredients? The malts brought a faint hint of bready caramel to the beer, but they were faint.
The body started not off with a punchy bitterness, but a smooth introduction to it, before slowly ramping up the bitterness to something more noticeable. It stopped short of becoming too potent, with the hoppy flavours coming along instead. The body started off with the tropical notes of pineapple and mango, interplaying against the orange and lemon throughout drinking. The sweetness was more noticeable in the body, with an edge of diluted creamy coconut flavour coming through, along with caramel flavour from the malts with a twinge of biscuit also being noted once Kyoto Brewing Kan had warmed up some more. The tropical flavours lingered for longest during the aftertaste though.
Kyoto Brewing Kan The Bottom Line
Kyoto Brewing Kan is an interesting experiment with sweetness and hops.
