Chichibu Koguma no Weizen is a 5% hefeweizen from Chichibu Beer, based in Chichibu, in Saitama, Japan. It’s part of their all-year round lineup and can be found in both bottles and on tap in limited places. Chichibu Koguma no Weizen uses locally sourced pesticide-free wheat, though it’s unsure whether it has been certified as organic at the time of writing. The beer was first released in June 2018.

Chichibu Koguma no Weizen Aroma and Taste

Chichibu Koguma no Weizen poured out a pale straw colour that was not as cloudy as expected; however, there was a huge amount of fluffy white head to the beer, that, once it had eventually subsided, came down to about one-quarter of its poured out size. In alignment with the not as cloudy body, the aroma was also much thinner than I had hoped for, with just a meagre amount of banana and clove, combined with a subtle sour nose to it that was more pleasant than unpleasant. As Chichibu Koguma no Weizen warmed up, an edge of wheat-like aroma came through too.

The body to Chichibu Koguma no Weizen was as thin as the flavour – a light dusting of banana and cloves that was far less than I had hoped for, or like, in a hefeweizen. The sourness was soothing more than unpleasant but Chichibu Koguma no Weizen just felt like a watered down weizen really.

Chichibu Koguma no Weizen The Bottom Line

Chichibu Koguma no Weizen isn’t a bad beer, but it’s not a good representation of a hefeweizen.
