Uchu Ale is a 6% American IPA from Uchu Brewing, based in Hokuto city, in Yamanashi, Japan. It’s part of their all-year round range of beers and can be found in both bottles and on tap. Uchu Ale is brewed using Golden Promise from the UK, Wheat and Carapils from Germeny with the hop bill consisting of Columbus, Amarillo, Citra, and Mosaic from the USA alongside some home-grown Cascade hops.
Uchu Ale Aroma and Taste
Uchu Ale poured out a hazy straw yellow colour with a minuscule amount of white head on top. The head barely lasted long enough to get the picture before fading to a few bubbles around the edge of the glass. The aroma coming off Uchu Ale was pure hops – lemon, citrus, grapefruit, with some peaches and pineapples coming through too. Not surprising that there was nothing to note from the malts, apart from a meagre amount of biscuit nose once it had warmed up.
The bitterness kicked in from the start though it eased off throughout drinking. The grapefruit, lemon, and pineapple flavours were well-balanced and thirst quenching. The body was neither thick nor cloying, supporting the hop flavours well. However, there was a faint hint of sourness to Uchu Ale that came through once it had warmed up. It finished off with lingering tropical notes that faded slowly.
Uchu Ale The Bottom Line
Get rid of the sour flavour and Uchu Ale is a very drinkable American IPA.
