Bayern Meister Bier Information

Background

Bayern Meister Bier was founded in 2004 by German brewmaster Stephan Rager and his Japanese wife Yukari, the brewery combines centuries-old Bavarian brewing traditions with Japan’s pristine natural environment. Located in Fujinomiya, Shizuoka Prefecture, Yukari’s hometown, the brewery occupies a restored sake warehouse that now serves as both a working brewery and a rustic German-style restaurant.

The story of Bayern Meister Bier began when Stephan, a master brewer with years of training and experience in Bavaria, relocated to Japan after marrying Yukari, who was originally from Fujinomiya, a town famous for its clear spring water that flows from Mount Fuji. Recognizing the unique potential of this water source, naturally filtered through volcanic rock and rich in minerals ideal for brewing, Stephan decided to create a true Bavarian brewery in Japan. In 2003, the couple leased an old sake warehouse in Fujinomiya, restoring and converting it into a traditional brewhouse and restaurant. By the summer of 2004, Bayern Meister Bier poured its first pint.

Beer Reviews

The following are some of the beers we’ve had:

  • Bayern Meister Edel Weiss – A 5.5% German hefeweizen brewed to a south German Bayern recipe which means it’s top fermented and contains lots of live yeast.
  • Bayern Meister Prinz – a 5% German style pilsner brewed using imported malt and Hallertau hops from South Germany
