Aoi Icebreaker Golden Ale, besides having a ridiculous name, is a 5% golden ale from Aoi Brewing, based in Shizuoka, Japan. It started life out as part of their draft only range, but found its way into bottles in late 2016, and is now available more readily. Aoi Icebreaker Golden Ale is brewed with both Pilsner Malt and Munich Malts with hops coming in the form of Merkur and Hallertau Blanc.

Aoi Icebreaker Golden Ale

Ridiculous name for a place that has no ice in the bay.

Aoi Icebreaker Golden Ale Aroma and Taste

Aoi Icebreaker Golden Ale poured out a hazy orange colour with a small amount of frothy white head on top that faded to a ring of bubbles around the outside of the glass. It had a strong biscuity pilsner nose with a slight noble-like hop aroma, and an ever-so-slight yeasty funk to it when Aoi Icebreaker Golden Ale had warmed up. If anything, it was more life a German pilsner or helles than golden ale as it lacked the juicy malt characters I’ve come to expect from golden ales in the nose.

I guess Aoi Icebreaker Golden Ale should be drunk when it has warmed up a bit as when cold, it tasted pretty one-dimensional, with some malt biscuitiness coming through and not much else. And I suggest you do the same too. The fruity flavours were more noticeable and brought pineapple and a juicy peachiness that paired off against the crisp snap of the malts. The fruitiness lingered on well past the beer and gone down and I found myself enjoying it a lot more.

Aoi Icebreaker Golden Ale The Bottom Line

Unlike ice, Aoi Icebreaker Golden Ale is best enjoyed warmed up. Do it and you’ll enjoy it a lot more than when its cold.
