Iwate Kura Yoitsugi is an 8% India Pale Ale brewed by Sekinoichi Shuzo, based in Iwate, Japan. It’s part of their collaboration series, this time with Rebirth Project; a Japanese organisation that focuses on sustainable projects and business. As such, this beer is certified organic though with ulterior motives as the brewers wanted a beer that they could drink to get drunk. At the time of writing, Iwate Kura Yoitsugi is a limited edition beer and can be found in bottles though we haven’t come across it in kegs yet.
Iwate Kura Yoitsugi Aroma and Taste
“I want to get drunk. Make me a beer to get drunk.” I can just imagine the ring across the brewer this has. Who hasn’t drunk beer to get drunk? With Iwate Kura Yoitsugi, they’ve gone for the right option as from the get go, the booze was evident from the first sniff. There was no hiding it as it smacks you around the head before letting up with some soft caramel malts and a slight bitter twang. This was a bold English style IPA and it wasn’t shy in showing that off. It looked like an English IPA as well, with a deep amber colour, topped by a slight one-finger head that dissipated quickly into the body.
The malt profile continued into the body with it being very malt forward and unashamedly so. The caramel flavour was the dominating one throughout drinking, and if there were any aroma hops, then they were drowned out by the malt. A shame really as I would have liked some more citrus tones to have come through the caramel flavour. It finished off leaving a sweet aftertaste on the palate and the merest of hints of bitterness too.
