Sankt Gallen Yokohama XPA by Sankt Gallen

Sankt Gallen Yokohama XPA is an IPA style beer that is sold as an extra pale ale by Sankt Gallen and is one of their strongest regular beers. Confused enough yet? It is also brewed on a recipe from 150 years ago and uses fresh Yokohama water from the source, and not the bay thankfully. Sankt Gallen Yokohama XPA has also won various awards from 2008 to 2010.

Yokohama XPA

An IPA that is labelled as an extra pale ale but is an IPA. Confusing? Good.

Sankt Gallen Yokohama XPA Aroma and Taste

Sankt Gallen Yokohama XPA confused me. What glass should I use? It’s supposedly an IPA but it’s labelled as an extra pale ale but extra hopped to be an IPA. Damn. IPA glass then. It poured out a caramel colour with an off white head that was more frothy and light. Aroma wise, the hoppy aroma we have come to expect from an IPA was present but it didn’t seem to have the usual nasal assault that an IPA possesses.

Once the frothy head had settled down, Sankt Gallen Yokohama XPA tasted more of an IPA than a pale ale but not by much. The body was a little watery for my liking and a light bitterness that didn’t really stick around for long. A hint of grass was also floated but by then I was not feeling this beer.

Sankt Gallen Yokohama XPA One Line Review

Sankt Gallen Yokohama XPA doesn’t quite know what it is supposed to be and doesn’t live up to IPA or pale ale tag.
