Tokyo Station 100 Year Lager caught us by surprise on a recent trip when we stopped in at Le Collier in Tokyo station. In 2014, Tokyo station celebrated its 100th anniversary and commissioned three different beers with Kiuchi Brewery brewing this Tokyo Station 100 Year Lager. In all honesty, I thought it was a mix up as I have never ever seen Hitachino Nest in a lager form. Ever.

Tokyo Station 100 Year Lager Aroma and Taste
Tokyo Station 100 Year Lager was fairly lively and had a medium carbonation which ran away when poured out but was saved by some quick straightening of the glass. The body was a golden straw colour with a firm head that hid some potent maltiness to it. The aroma was pleasant but unexpected as it was supposed to be a lager. Were Kiuchi Brewery playing with me again?
When it comes to drinking though, Tokyo Station 100 Year Lager is not a lager by any means. It smacks with flavour of a weizen, crispness of a pilsner, and the aroma of a pale ale. Tokyo Station 100 Year Lager is so difficult to label as one but the hoppiness just wins over the wheaty and banana flavours of the weizen. The aftertaste was a gentle maltiness that lends itself well and rounds off all the flavours well.

BeerTengoku found Tokyo Station 100 Year Lager in Le Collier in Tokyo Station at the beginning of August 2014 but were told it was a limited edition beer. Here’s hoping Hitachino Nest make it a regular lager to add to their collection.
