Awaji Rice Pilsner is a 3.5% rice beer from Awaji Beer, based in Hyogo, Japan. It’s part of their all-year round lineup and can be found in both bottles and on tap across Japan. Awaji Rice Pilsner is brewed using a local strain of rice known as “Kinuhikari” and the beer also won gold at the Asia Beer Cup in 2017.

Awaji Rice Pilsner Aroma and Taste

A 3.5% beer?! Yes, we know what a lot of people of thinking about but hear us out. Awaji Rice Pilsner is actually a nice beer and is a true “session” beer. It had a sharp sweet nose to it, along with a slight sake, ricey nose to it, which masked a faint malty biscuit aroma. There weren’t any hops coming through in the aroma but the marriage of sake and malts was well balanced. The meagre white head faded fast to a few bubbles around the side of the glass.

The body was as crisp as the nose, though understandably a tad thin to really support all the flavours. The sake ricey flavour was the strongest; however, there was also a subtle malt backbone to Awaji Rice Pilsner that lingered through to the aftertaste. There was no hop bitterness to it yet the crisp body was really refreshing.
