Good Hops Promise : Background
Good Hops Promise is a 4% saison from Good Hops, based in Tono, Iwate. It’s part of their regular line-up, and is available in both cans and on draught. It’s brewed using three new strains of hops grown by Good Hops : Tono Uncountable, Tono Compact Green, and Tono No Wind. Finally, this beer was brewed by a pair of hop farmers who got married this year. They named it “promise” to express their pledge to continue protecting Tono hops for their own future and together with their colleagues

Good Hops Promise : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste
Good Hops Promise poured out a vibrant golden honey colour with a medium amount of sticky white head on top. That head did dissipate away though to a thin layer of bubbles on top, though it did leave some rings around the glass during drinking as well.
The aroma was a peculiar one from the get-go. At 4%, this was on the lighter side of the saison range that I’ve had; that included the aromas too. I was hoping for something phenolic; something a little fruity; something dry. Yet I didn’t get any of that – all I got was some light mustiness with a subtle citrus note from it all. There was just a smidgen of malt sweetness present; nothing outstanding or warranting attention.
I was even more confused by the body of Good Hops Promise. As mentioned, after seeing this was on the lighter side for a saison, my excitement was reigned in somewhat and I was glad that I had done that. The beer, while generally clean, just felt a bit limp in terms of both body and flavour. While there was a touch of light citrus note present, there was nothing really to note that you’re drinking a saison.
