West Coast Secret Sauce : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste
West Coast Secret Sauce poured out a slightly hazy golden straw colour with a massive amount of fluffy white head on top. That same head lasted for ages, leaving some thick streaks down the edge of the glass. It actually made me think, should I do a before and after drinking for it stuck around for so long.
The aroma coming off the beer was a thick citrus nose of grapefruit and orange, with a touch of lemon coming through as it warmed up. The hops, unsurprisingly from a West Coast Brewing beer, were the star of the show here; however, there was a smidgen of malt sweetness coming through. Just a touch of pilsner crackeriness shining through the hops. As the beer warmed up, there was also some herbal aromas present – I couldn’t quite put my nose on them – but it wasn’t citrus for sure.
With this being an American pale ale, the first sip to the last gulp had a lingering bitterness presenbt, which was welcome, but not overpowering. The hops came along with more of the citrus notes – grapefruit and orange as in the nose – and while I would have liked some developing of flavour, it wasn’t a bad tasting beer. The malt flavour had a touch of light pilsner bite to it, with some grassy notes present from the hops lingering just under the surface too.
West Coast Secret Sauce : The Bottom Line
This is a solid, crushable American pale ale from West Coast. No surprise, but I got this on the cheap. At full price of almost ¥1,300? Na, not worth it.
