Mahowbrew Depths of Muspelheim

Mahowbrew Depths of Muspelheim : Background

Mahowbrew Depths of Muspelheim is a 7% wee heavy from Mahowbrew, based in Naha, Okinawa. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, though its availability is unknown at the time of writing. The beer is based on the traditional Scottish wee heavy, with a small amount of Muntons peated malt added as an accent to bring out the deep aroma. Besides that, the beer has East Kent Golding hops and takes its name from the realm of fire, in Norse mythology, a place where the fire giants live.

Mahowbrew Depths of Muspelheim : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste

This is the first wee heavy we’ve had on the site, so I had to do some deep research about the style. Compounded with the fact that they have also used peated malt – talk about lots of research!

Anyway, the beer poured out a deep brownish, verging on black, colour with a thick off-white, almost tan coloured head on top. That head had some serious staying power, as it also left some thick streaks down the side of the glass during drinking, and a slight oily layer on top.

With the peated malt, I knew what I was letting myself in for. Mahowbrew Depths of Muspelheim had an initial nose that was similar to a strong whisky, heavy in peat – not really my cup of tea to be honest. However, there was also an aroma of caramel present, with a sweet candied aroma lingering underneath it all. Though East Kent Goldings had been used in the beer, I couldn’t really detect anything from them, and that was mainly due to the peated malt used.

The body began in the same way as the nose – a thick peated flavour, that was akin to a caramel biscuit soaked in whisky. If you like that kind of flavour, then you’d like Mahowbrew Depths of Muspelheim. There was an underlying warmth to the beer, with the 7% of alcohol bringing that forward during drinking. As in the aroma, the hops were lost on me and didn’t bring anything to drinking.
