Novoru Toberu

Novoru Toberu : Background

Novoru Toberu is a 10% triple IPA from Novoru Brewing, based in Miyazaki, Kyushu. It’s part of their limited lineup, though at the time of writing it’s available in both cans and on draught. Novoru Toberu is brewed with Centennial, Chinook Cryo, and Columbus hops and involved a double mash, which according to Novoru Brewing is “a method which involves adding malt to the wort obtained after saccharification and filtration in the usual way, and then saccharifying it again”. Finally, it’s a collaborative effort, with the Tokyo bar Craftworks getting in on the action.

Novoru Toberu : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste

I bought this as a draught rather than a canned version, as the draught version was actually cheaper than getting the can. As you can see, the beer came out very hazy, with a golden honey colour and, unlike the normal serving of beers at Craft Beer iBrew Yokohama, came with a smidgen of head.

The aroma was full on boozy with this beer. There was a big aroma of dank resinous note from the beginning, with it lingering through drinking. With the alcohol being high in this one, it was unsurprising that the underlying aroma in the beer was booze which grew as the beer warmed up. There was a smidgen of citrus lemon note hiding within all of the boozy, resinous notes but it was a blink and miss it.

It should go without saying but Novoru Toberu is a full bodied beer, almost gloopy during drinking. It’s not a sipper of a beer by any means, though it does showcase the citrus and resinous notes from the hops, with a pronounced bitterness from start to finish. Notes of lemon and mango, with some honey-like flavour from the malts. The booziness also comes screaming through, but not in a hot, heated manner, rather just a soothing effort.

Novoru Toberu : The Bottom Line

It’s big and bold, lacking in subtlety – and one and done beer.
