Beer Again Fukuyoka : Background
Beer Again Fukuyoka is 6.5% West Coast IPA from Beer Again Brewing, based in Gotemba, Shizuoka. It’s part of their regular lineup, and at the time of writing, is available in both bottles and on draught. Beer Again Fukuyoka is brewed using the same lager yeast that’s used in their Beer Again Nova Lager, with hops in the form of Cascade, Citra, Idaho 7, and Mosaic being used. The word “fukuyoka (フクヨカ)” roughly translate to “pleasent” or “rich” when talking about something to eat or drink. Finally, this is the seventh version of this batch, so future beers may have a different recipe.

Beer Again Fukuyoka : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste
Beer Again Fukuyoka came up a light golden straw colour with a thick white head on top, made up of small bubbles that popped away quickly, leaving a few on top.
In terms of aroma, Beer Again Fukuyoka is more of a modern West Coast IPA, than your classic old school dank, resionous version. That’s not to say it’s a bad beer by any means, just trying to temper your expectations. The aroma was citrus loaded; grapefruit, lemon, and orange were all noted, with a big tropical bouquet mixed in for good measure with some mango and pineapple notes. There was a touch of malt sweetness – some light cracker notes permeating through – but I was still hoping for something in the body.
And that body began with a smooth, well rounded bitterness that lingered from the start to the end. Instead of the dank, resinous body I was hoping for, I ended up with more of the citrus and tropical notes that were present in the aroma. Once again, not a bad thing, just not what I was hoping for. The body was medium-dry and light, with a definite lager bite to finish it off.
Beer Again Fukuyoka : The Bottom Line
Beer Again Fukuyoka is a solid beer, a modern take on a West Coast IPA, but just don’t go expecting something dank or resinous.
