Thrash Zone Frontside Grind : Background
Thrash Zone Frontside Grind is a 4% session IPA from Thrashzone Labo, based in Yokohama, in Kanagawa. It’s part of their regular lineup and can be found in both cans and on tap, though the availability of these two is subject to where you are in Japan – I’m yet to see either outside the Yokohama area really. Thrash Zone Frontside Grind was first released back in 2016 and found its way into cans once the Thrash Zone Tanmachi Brewery opened up in 2022. It originally started out as collaboration beer with a skateboard park out in Chiba but that collaboration is long gone now and this beer still stands. As to what went into making the beer, it’s unknown at the time of writing.

Thrash Zone Frontside Grind : Appearance
Slightly hazy with a massive amount of frothy white head on top. The bubbles left some sticky streaks down the side of the glass, before settling down to a thin ring around the edge.
Thrash Zone Frontside Grind : Aroma
Plasticky. Something seems off with this beer. Like it was infected with some in-house infection, but the same beers I drank on top were not. Perhaps a canning issue but it really didn’t smell “good”.
Thrash Zone Frontside Grind : Taste
Bitterness from the get-go but some phenolic flavour to it. Very plasticky but it seems that I was the only person that could taste it. Other people who had the cans were happy with it but I really couldn’t get past the issues with this beer. There were some notes of citrus and tropical fruits from the beer – lemon and pineapple – but the off flavours were not for me.

I ended up giving the rest of this beer away – I really couldn’t stomach it yet other people did.
