The Brew : The Bottom Line

While the choice of in-house beers at The Brew is a touch old-fashion, think weizens, pilsners, and doppelbocks, the beers are all well-made, and the happy-hour deal of buy-one-get-one-“free” means it’s hard to pass up The Brew. So don’t. Head on over when you can, and get a DiDi taxi to take you back.

The Brew : Background

It’s not often you come across a hotel with its own brewery attached to it, but at the Kerry Hotel Shanghai, that’s exactly what you have. It’s an Australian-designed craft brewery, featuring signature beers brewed on-site by a resident brew master, a menu of classic pub snacks, with the occasional live music – and it’s open for everyone, regardless of if you’re staying the hotel or not.

The Brew is located around a 20 minute taxi journey from the centre of Shanghai, in the Pudong area. Less said about that area the better. You can’t miss the amount of outside seating here, and if the weather had been more predictable, or in fact just sunny, I would have been sat outside drinking.

The Brew : Beer & Food Information

There are 8 tap of craft beer and cider to choose from, with the majority of the styles being firmly entrenched in German brewing styles and techniques. I do like a good pilsner and weizen so I was happy, but if you’re looking for the latest hazy IPA or extreme beer, you won’t find it here. The beers come in four sizes : half pint (280 ml) at 58 RMB, pint (568 ml) at 72 RMB, 1L at 128 RMB, and then a 3L pitcher at 358 RMB, so the more you buy, the cheaper it gets – or something like that.

But come for the happy hour from 15:00 – 20:00 where it’s all beers buy one get one free. Fantastic deal really so you’re getting two pints for the price of one. With the beers being very well made, I had a pilsner and a crystal pilsner on the day, you could easily explore the menu over a couple of days.
