Seoul Gypsy : The Bottom Line

Seoul Gypsy is one of the places to be seen drinking craft beer while you’re in Seoul – and I hate to say this, but it’s for a good reason. The beers I had here were top-notch, the staff were super knowledgeable, and the atmosphere inside the building was brilliant. A massive downpour may have bumped up my opinion of this place, but I’d still come back and visit it in the sunnier, and drier, moments.

Seoul Gypsy Inside

Seoul Gypsy : Background

Seoul Gypsy – another craft beer place located in another hanok in Seoul. Surely someone could have come up with something different for a “unique” idea. Yet, stepping inside Seoul Gypsy, it felt like this was going to be a different kind of drinking session, as this place was built by craft beer drinkers, for craft beer drinkers. It’s located way off the beaten track, which means you’ve got to know about this place to come here, but somehow, I stumbled across it when I was walking back to my hotel.

And I’m delighted that I did. There’s so little information out there about this place – even their Instagram, which acts as their homepage, lacks any kind of detail. From their own blog, that seems to go amiss due to it not translating into English:

“In 2017, we took on our first challenge on Seosunra-gil, an unknown neighbourhood. There were only metalworking factories, motorbike delivery centres, and factories that cut vegetables for school lunches. It was a courageous thing to do on a road where no one had to go to the toilet. At that time, we started on the fringes of the commercial district with no name and no fans.”

Seoul Gypsy : Beer & Food Information

There’s something I love about getting lost, walking into a bar, and then trying to work out what I am ordering. And at Seoul Gypsy, I had no idea until one of the staff put me out of my misery and picked out some of the beers for me. The names of the beers were in Hangul, but as soon as I saw IPA, I knew what I was going to drink. And like very other place in Seoul, the beers were all one size and the actual paper menus were in English. Crisis averted. As the rain poured down that day, I sat and drank drank some more, and had another, but the beers didn’t come cheap. At ₩8500 for some 350 ml pours, Seoul Gypsy was perhaps the most expensive place for me on this trip, but with the staff this helpful, the beers this damned good, and the weather so damned shitty, I was stuck. And happy.
