Sanriku Shumatsu no Umineko : Background

Sanriku Shumatsu no Umineko is a 5% witbier from Sanriku Brewing Company based in Ofunato, Iwate. It’s part of their regular lineup and can be found both in cans and on draught. Though this is witbier and uses the traditional ingredietns of orange peel and coriander, it also uses hand-picked Kesen camellia tea leaves from the Kesen area of Iwate Prefecture alongside. There are also Saaz hops involved.

Cloudy dull straw colour with a plump white head that leaves white streaks down the side of the glass.

Sanriku Shumatsu no Umineko : Aroma

Mixed sour notes with some tea like phenols being present. Some hints of traditional Belgian witbier with a touch of orange and spice to the nose, with subtle yeasty notes.

Sanriku Shumatsu no Umineko : Taste

Peculiar but neither in a good or bad way – if that makes sense? It’s a slightly sour beer, with tea-like qualities to the body, but combined with a fruitiness of oranges and some yeasty fruity phenols. It’s all a bit mixed up really.
