Fukuoka Daruma DDH is an 8% hazy double IPA from Fukuoka Craft Brewing, based in Fukuoka, in Kyushu, Japan. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, though its availability is unknown at the time of writing. As the name suggests, Fukuoka Daruma DDH is double dry hopped, which compared to the base recipe, gives it twice as many hops. Fukuoka Daruma DDH is a collaboration effort, with Ganso Hakata Daruma that was established back in 1963, and Fukuoka Daruma uses Citra and Mosaic hops.

Fukuoka Daruma DDH : Aroma & Taste

Fukuoka Daruma DDH poured out a very hazy but dull yellow colour with a thin amount of white head on top that faded to a few bubbles around the edge of the glass. The aroma made up for the appearance of the beer with the hops bringing a strong citrus and tropical aroma – the citrus bringing grapefruit and lemon and the tropical being mango and pineapple. Fukuoka Daruma DDH had a distinct sweetness to it that did cut through the hoppiness but thankfully it didn’t develop into a cloying aroma though the sweetness did accentuate the alcohol heat a touch more than I expected as the beer warmed up.

The body to Fukuoka Daruma DDH began with a medium level of bitterness – enough to prick up the taste buds – though it mellowed out as the beer warmed up. In terms of flavour, Fukuoka Daruma DDH was distinctly hop forward with a big citrus and tropical body of flavours being found in the beer. Once again, there was a definite sweetness to the beer which brought with it some light alcohol heat – not enough to detract away from the flavours in the beer but enough to be noticed.

Fukuoka Daruma DDH : The Bottom Line

More hops is usually a good thing, and Fukuoka Daruma DDH has them in a controlled manner.
