Heiwa in Kugenuma-Kaigan, Kanagawa

It’s been a while since I’ve found a little shop like Heiwa in the middle of nowhere – usually something like this would go on the “Off The Beaten Track” series, but Heiwa is too good not to share – plus I promised the person I was with that I would share it with all.

Heiwa is located near Kugenuma-Kaigan station on the Odakyu line, and is about a 10 minute walk from the station, a bit longer if you take the scenic route along the river. Heiwa originally started out as a nihonshu and wine store; however, the son of the owner had a penchant for craft beer and convinced his family to start selling local craft beers. Over time, the range grew to cover imports too, with beers from USA and further afield on sale.

Heiwa also has a tap of craft beer on throughout the year, and bottles can be bought to either be drunk on site, at the small bench outside the front of the store, or taken away. The good thing about Heiwa is that there is no corkage / bottle fee, so feel free to buy as many as you want, and drink as much as you want.
