100k Craft Beer & Pizza The Bottom Line
100k Craft Beer & Pizza is a warm and friendly place very close to the main Kyoto station. They have a good selection of food and drink, but unlike the name suggests, are not limited to just craft beer and pizza. I’d recommend it as a nice place to bring anyone visiting Kyoto to introduce them to Japan’s take on craft beer and Italian food.
100k Craft Beer & Pizza The Full Review
100K Craft Beer & Pizza (aka Hyakkei) is exactly what you’d expect from the name: it’s a craft beer bar with a food menu specializing in pizza. They have a drink menu which includes a Sapporo Black Label draft, umeshu, wine, whiskey, gin, cocktails, and soft drinks, and a menu of always available craft beers from Spring Valley Brewery, but they also have a separate menu of selected craft beers that change depending on availability. Prices for craft beers are based on size, a small (240 ml half pint) is ¥700, a medium (360 ml) is ¥800, and a large (460 ml pint) is ¥1100. Alternatively, you can select a flight of any 3 beers on the menu for ¥1500.
While Hyakkei is obviously known for its pizza, they also have a decently sized menu full of other options including tapas, salad, ajillo, and fried food. Course options in various ranges are also available if you’re planning for a party. If you arrive early enough you should consider ordering off of the curry, pasta, or pizza lunch menus, which come with a salad and a soft drink. Prices for these are ¥1000 for the curry set, and ¥1280 for the pasta or pizzas with toppings.
The pizza menu is fairly extensive, with several premade options listed, as well as a list of additional toppings which you can add to any pizza. Pizza prices start at 980 for a small (20 cm) margherita (¥1280 for a medium 26 cm) and increase by ¥200-500 per topping with meat or seafood toppings being the most expensive choices. If you’re splitting a pizza between several people you can also order a Mega Size (42 cm) which is ¥4200. All pizza is available for take out as well for an additional 100 box fee. I found my pizza to have a good balance between cheese and a sweet tomato sauce, but it was a bit overdone and crispy around the edges. Overall the slightly burnt bits wouldn’t prevent me from ordering a pizza the next time I visit.
The staff I encountered inside the restaurant was friendly and accomodating. They have table space for about 25 customers, with bar and counter seating for about 15 more, all available without a table charge. Free wi-fi is provided, with small plaques at each table encouraging guests to use it and to check out their instagram page and the restaurant is a non-smoking venue.
