Ise Kadoya Cosmos Wheat Ale is a 5% wheat ale from Ise Kadoya, based in Mie, Japan. It’s part of their wild yeast series, and this one focuses on using yeast harvested from the cosmos – the flower, not the universe! Tokyo Agricultural Isolate Flower Yeast Research Society harvested the yeast at first and then licensed it to Ise Kadoya to use in this beer. Though it is a wheat ale, Ise Kadoya have also been quite generous with the hops with imported Columbus, Mosaic, Simcoe, Cascade, and El Dorado all being used to make the beer. At the time of writing, Ise Kadoya Cosmos Wheat Ale can be found in both bottles and on tap, though as it is a limited edition beer, expect it to sell out soon.

Ise Kadoya Cosmos Wheat Ale Aroma and Taste

Ise Kadoya Cosmos Wheat Ale poured out a hazy golden colour with a bare minimum amount of head on top – you can just about see it in the picture above and that was taken immediately after pouring. I don’t know what the cosmos flower smells like, I’ve not actually knowingly seen one either, but Ise Kadoya Cosmos Wheat Ale did have a slight floral smell to it, with some citrusy hints to it as well. Once the beer had been given a chance to warm up, there was also a subtle wheat aroma to it, but Ise Kadoya Cosmos Wheat Ale was a delicate beer from start to finish.

Though there were a plethora of hops used in making Ise Kadoya Cosmos Wheat Ale, there was no sense of hoppy bitterness to it at all. In fact, it was far more floral than the nose was, with a faint earthy, noble hop-like quality to it. The wheat was quite prevalent though during drinking, and it was only when the beer had warmed up that some of the tropical flavours from the hops, such as pineapple and mango, actually began to shine through – but only just. The wheat creaminess in the aftertaste was nice, but also fleeting.

Ise Kadoya Cosmos Wheat Ale The Bottom Line

Ise Kadoya Cosmos Wheat Ale isn’t a bad beer, but it is a flavour light beer if you don’t let it warm up.
