Y Market La Mosaique, or to use the proper fancy French alphabet Y Market La Mosaïque, is a 5% saison from Y Market Brewing, based in Nagoya, in Aichi, Japan. It’s part of their regular lineup and can be found on tap and in cans from May 2019 onwards. Y Market La Mosaique is brewed using imported Simcoe and Mosaic hops from the USA – eschewing the traditional French hops used in a saison. Y Market La Mosaique gets its name from the substantial amount of Mosaic hops used for both bittering and aroma.

Y Market La Mosaique Aroma and Taste

Y Market La Mosaique poured out a hazy golden orange colour with just a minimal amount of fluffy white head on top though it faded to a few bubbles around the outside of the glass. With so much Mosaic going into Y Market La Mosaique, it was always going to have the expected aroma of passion fruit, lemons, pineapples, and mango, but the contrasting yeast funk against the hops was an interesting contribution. And unusual. There was a just a faint biscuit malt base hiding behind the hops though.

Y Market La Mosaique was definitely all about the use of Mosaic hops – one of my personal favourites – than sticking to the style. The fruity punch contrasted against the slightly sour bitter yeasty funk and went down very well in the 31c heatwave. When Y Market La Mosaique had warmed up, there was more of yeasty kick to the beer than chilled. The lingering Mosaic hop flavours were nice, if a little sticky on the palate.
