Fujizakura Extreme Pilsner is a 6.5% India pale lager from Fujizakura Kogen Beer, based in Yamanashi, Japan. It’s part of their Fujizakura Beer Project line up, and is also Fujuzakura’s first foray into canning their beers. At the time of writing, it’s unknown what hops or malts went into making Fujizakura Extreme Pilsner.
Fujizakura Extreme Pilsner
Fujizakura Extreme Pilsner poured out a slightly hazy dark golden orange colour with a plump white head on top. It didn’t look like a pilsner – far darker than I expected – but the nose was most peculiar. It smelt initially like a hopped up pilsner, with a big citrus hop nose of grapefruit and lemon coming through, with some hints of biscuit malts just for good measure. When it had warmed up, Fujizakura Extreme Pilsner began to smell like a pilsner with some corny aroma coming through.
The IPA influence is impossible to ignore in Fujizakura Extreme Pilsner. From the first bitter swig of beer, right through to the lingering citrus hop flavours, Fujizakura Extreme Pilsner is all about the hops, and the malts taking a back seat. The citrus flavours are well balanced with each other and make this a refreshing, thirst quenching beer. It’s only when it has warmed up that the sweetness from the malts is more noticeable. Just. Fujizakura Extreme Pilsner finished off with the aforementioned lingering citrus flavours and subtle dryness to it.
Fujizakura Extreme Pilsner The Bottom Line
Fujizakura Extreme Pilsner isn’t extreme as it’s made out to be, but nonetheless, it’s a decent, well-made IPL.
