Hansharo Yama Da! Koyo Da! Wheat Ale is a 5% American wheat ale from Hansharo Beer, based in Shizuoka, Japan. It’s part of their Autumn seasonal line up and its name roughly translates to “Look at the mountains! Look at the falling leaves!” – talk about writing a catchy name there. The brewer, Yamada-san, is known for his liking of Belgian wheat ales, but produced this an American wheat ale to better attract the market. Like other seasonal beers from Hansharo Beer, it’s unknown whether this is a one-off or if it will be released again in the future.v
Hansharo Yama Da! Koyo Da! Wheat Ale Aroma and Taste
Hansharo Yama Da! Koyo Da! Wheat Ale poured out a very hazy amber colour with a minimum amount of head on top – nothing besides a few bubbles around the outside that left as quickly as they developed. It had a strong biscuity aroma with just a meagre amount of slight citrus aroma to it though it didn’t linger nor develop much more than a brief hit on the nose. American wheat ales, such as Blue Moon, are usually served with slice of lemon but seeing as I had none to hand, then the traditional route of just drinking the beer was going to have to be had.
The body was initially wheaty before mellowing out; however, it would be hard to describe Hansharo Yama Da! Koyo Da! Wheat Ale as either thirst quenching or refreshing. It had a slight crackery flavour – kind of like one of those biscuits you use for cheese – and also a slight bitter lemony edge to it that wasn’t overpowering or lingering. It finished off as quickly as it started, and on the whole, felt a tad bland – the perfect American wheat ale I guess from my experience.
Hansharo Yama Da! Koyo Da! Wheat Ale The Bottom Line
Hansharo Yama Da! Koyo Da! Wheat Ale is a pretty bland wheat ale that is missing out on a lot of lingering flavours.
