Yellow Monkey Hoppy Saison : Background
Yellow Monkey Hoppy Saison is a 5% saison from Yellow Monkey Brewing, based in Nakagawa, in Yokohama, Kanagawa. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, though its availability is unknown at the time of writing. As the name suggests, Yellow Monkey Hoppy Saison has been dealt a large hand with the hops with Nelson, Motueka, and Riwaka used in the making of it. Finally, this beer was first brewed in December 2024 with it is the first anniversary beer of “Siblings”, a home cooking restaurant in Myorenji, Yokohama. Kengo, the head brewer, has known the Higashiyama sisters since his previous job, and at their request, decided to brew this beer in collaboration.

Yellow Monkey Hoppy Saison : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste
Yellow Monkey Hoppy Saison poured out a dull, hazy golden honey colour with a large frothy white head on top, that left some thick streaks down the side of the glass. Even at the end of drinking, there was some remnants of that same head in the bottom of the glass.
The aroma was a peculiar one – and I kind of blame the Yellow Monkey Godzone Beat that I had drunk before hand. That had pop and flair, while this one just seemed dull and a bit all over the shop. The hops brought a touch of pineapple and some citrus notes, but the yeast funk didn’t play off aginst it nicely. Perhaps there had been too many hops added to this beer as it really didn’t seem to come together.
With regards to the body, it was again more of a case of a mixed up flavour profile and a beer not quite sure what it was trying to be. The phenols from the yeast, and the hop flavours just failed to hit it off. The peachiness from the phenol, combined with the pineapple and citrus didn’t really do it for. However, that’s not to say this was a bad beer, as the flavours were good, but just didn’t work in conjunction.
Yellow Monkey Hoppy Saison : The Bottom Line
I’m in two minds about this beer. Maybe as a pale ale, it would have been good, but a hoppy saison means two birds with one stone doesn’t hit either here.
