Kanpai! Teppō-zaka Slope IPA is a 6.5% West Coast IPA from Kanpai! Brewing, based in Tokyo, Japan. It’s part of their regular lineup and can be found in both bottles and on tap. Kanpai! Teppō-zaka Slope IPA takes its name from the Teppō-zaka, an historical monument in the area where here was a gun practice field of the Shogunate under the hill in the Edo period. That’s pretty much the only information about Kanpai! Teppō-zaka Slope IPA we could find.

Kanpai! Teppō-zaka Slope IPA : Aroma & Taste

Kanpai! Teppō-zaka Slope IPA poured out a hazy light golden orange colour with a large plump white head on top that lasted for a long time on the beer. The aroma started off with a distinct and clear pine nose to the beer, with some caramel that also came through – so it started off well. As Kanpai! Teppō-zaka Slope IPA warmed up, there was also some light citrus aromas – in the form of lemon and grapefruit – that came through, but there was also diacetyl – that buttery aroma that comes through when yeast is stressed or the beer hasn’t been cleaned up properly.

Kanpai! Teppō-zaka Slope IPA began with a distinct and clean hoppy bitterness that faded to an ever-so-slight resinous pine flavour. It’s a shame though that the pine flavour didn’t stick around for much longer though as it did more towards a citrus flavour of lemon and grapefruit – a nice change but none of the flavours really stuck around for long. However, the diacetyl flavour was also present, and was not welcome either in this style. Kanpai! Teppō-zaka Slope IPA finished off with some of the citrus and diacetyl lingering – not a good way to finish a beer.

Kanpai! Teppō-zaka Slope IPA : The Bottom Line

Let Kanpai! Teppō-zaka Slope IPA clean up for a bit longer, and add some more hops, and you’d have a good beer. Right now, it’s just about ok.
