Liquid Laundry : The Bottom Line

I had spent 4 days in the depths of Pudong, Shanghai and I fell in love with Liquid Laundry the moment I walked in. Perhaps it was someone speaking English to me; perhaps it was the view; perhaps it could have been I had missed out on decent beer; however, I loved Liquid Laundry and I wish I had more time here. It was simply a brilliant place – so much that I picked up some canned beers that got me into trouble on the way back in Japan. If you’re in Shanghai, get to Liquid Laundry.

Liquid Laundry Inside

Liquid Laundry : Background

Having been stuck in the darkest depths of Pudong for 4 days, I was itching to get out for some local craft beer. Shanghai, unlike Shenzhen, seemed to be a black hole for craft beer. All the shops in the area of the hotel I had been staying in – the Novotel Clover – had nothing. Just local shitty beer in the form of Tsingtao among others. It had gotten to a point that I was necking back G&T and hoping the next day, would be the next leap home.

Yet, I took the metro into Shanghai central and found about 6 craft beer bars in the vicinity. Liquid Laundry was the first on the list, and like so many other places in Shanghai, information was dearth about this place. Apparently, this place was opened  by serial restauranteur Kelly Lee, the woman behind Sproutworks, iiiiit, Boxing Cat, and Cantina Agave – if that’s a good thing, I don’t know. All I know is that it opened in April 2014 and it’s in the heart of Shanghai.

Liquid Laundry : Beer & Food Information

Liquid Laundry had 14 beers on tap, with the beers being brewed in-house, and also from Boxing Cat Brewery. The beers come in one size which was supposedly 350 ml from 45 RMB but there is a beer flight of 12 glasses for 258 RMB though no way was I doing that at 11 am. Yes, I got there that early because I wanted a beer or two. Liquid Laundry does do takeaway beers at 35 RMB per 500 ml can – a bargain if you don’t mind getting stopped at customs & immigration when you leave China. I picked up a few beers here, enough to warrant a beer round up post, but safe to say, they were all suprisingly solid and well made.

In terms of food, it’s mostly Western based here and the staff did speak enough English that embarassed my lack of Chinese. I guess I should learn some for my next visit, but thankfully, the menus here included pictures of the food as well.
