West Coast Mu : Background

West Coast Mu is a 10.5% triple IPA from West Coast Brewing, based in Mochimune, Shizuoka. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, though its availability is unknown at the time of writing. It’s part of their, at the time of writing, new series called the “Dungeon Series” though why it’s called “Mu”, the twelfth letter of the Greek alphabet, is unknown to me, so let us know in the comments below. West Coast Mu is brewed with a combination of Ekuanot, El Dorado, and Simcoe hops.

West Coast Mu : Appearance

The beer poured out a hazy golden orange straw colour with some chill haze to it, though that did clear up a touch as the beer warmed up. The head was large and frothy, though it stuck around for a long time, and left some streaks down the side of the glass during drinking.

West Coast Mu : Aroma

Bit of a funny one – large fruity aroma with dank notes. Mango and pineapple, alongside some lemon and oranges permeated through drinking. There was a fair amount of sweetness in the nose, perhaps from the malts, though I am unsure if it was balanced properly with the hop aroma. As the beer warmed up, some alcohol heat was noted, though it wasn’t enough to detract from the hops.

West Coast Mu : Taste

Smooth with a touch of sweetness in the backend. The bitterness was quite low in the beer, though it was more pronounced as it warmed up. The beer did have the fruity notes from the nose so a cross between citrus and tropical flavours present. Though it’s 10.5%, it didn’t taste that strong and was fairly easy drinking. When it had warmed up, the alcohol heat was more pronounced but again, it didn’t detract from the flavours too much.

West Coast Mu : The Bottom Line

It’s a funny one – I liked the beer enough to drink it all, but it was a touch too sweet for my liking. I’ve definitely had better from West Coast Brewing in the past.
