Shonan Beer Tengu Barrel Aged Barley Wine (2017) is a 12% barrel aged barley wine from Kumazawa Brewing. It’s aged in Ichiro’s Malt whiskey barrels. This is the 2017 release of the Tengu range; the beer changes yearly, but the cool red wrapping paper does not! It also doesn’t have any indication what the beer is on the wrapping, which means you’ll have to do your research and make sure it’s a beer you want. Rob was extremely annoyed to find that his 2016 Tengu was a wheat wine instead of a barrel aged Belgian stout like the year before.
Shonan Beer Tengu Barrel Aged Barley Wine 2017 Aroma and Taste
Tengu pours out a cloudy mahogany colour with virtually no head.
The aroma is of oak, honey, dried fruit, dates and golden syrup.
Tasting it, it’s primarily extremely boozy, and also sweet and malty. The dry fruit is overwhelmed by the woody, dry and bitter flavour, and the aftertaste has a good single malt burn with some liquorice thrown in there for good measure.
Shonan Beer Tengu Barrel Aged Barley Wine 2017: The Bottom Line
Maybe too dry or woody for some, but I found this extremely agreeable. Perhaps let it age to calm down the bitter woody flavours and emphasise the dry fruit.
