TY Harbor Pale Ale is 5% American style pale ale from TY Harbor Brewery, based in Shinagawa, Tokyo. It’s part of their all-year round range and can be find in both bottles and on draft at all of the TY Sons restaurants and bars. TY Harbor Pale Ale is brewed with 100% Cascade hops.
TY Harbor Pale Ale Aroma and Taste
For a “big” Tokyo brewery, TY Harbor Brewery don’t seem to want to make their beers readily available – neither of my two go-to stores, Le Collier or Liquors Hasegawa, stock any of their range of beers and they’re located just up the road from Shinagawa. Well, if you can call Tokyo “just up the road”. I’ve had TY Harbor Pale Ale at both the Urban Smokehouse and TY Harbor Brewery a couple of times but finally managed to sneak a bottle in too.
It poured out a light bronze colour with a decent amount of frothy head on top as well, about two fingers worth that clung to the side of the glass as the beer went down. There was also the unmistakeable smell of Cascade hops on top with a strong citrusy and floral aroma that was punctuated by some subtle sweetness from the malts.
TY Harbor Pale Ale was immediately noticed as an American pale ale with it being so hop-forward. The bitterness, while somewhat restrained, was still verging on IPA levels of beer, so watch out there. With the hops being so strong, it was always going to be hard for the malts to shine through but they just managed to sneak in once or twice during drinking. The crisp sweetness from the malts was a relaxing change from the bitterness of the hops which lasted through right into the aftertaste.
TY Harbor Pale Ale One Line Review
A shame really as while this beer is a nice beer, it’s a tad to bitter for me to be a decent pale ale.
