Boxing Cat Brewery Xintiandi : The Bottom Line

Boxing Cat Brewery Xintiandi is a strange place to list on here – Boxing Cat was opened in 2008 in Shanghai and is now the city’s longest surviving brewery. In 2016 they became the first Chinese microbrewery to win a medal at the World Beer Festival. In March this year, AB InBev, the world’s largest brewer, purchased Boxing Cat through its venture capital arm ZX Ventures. So why are they are on here? I guess because Shanghai has so little to offer that anything with some craft beer on tap gets listed on here. That’s not to say this is a bad place – there’s a decent range of beers on tap but there are better places in the city now to get some craft beer on tap.

Boxing Cat Brewery Xintiandi : Background

I was walking from two previous places – Liquid Laundry and Mad Dragon – in the search of craft beer. Who’d have thought a city with 20 million + people would have a dearth of craft beer. And that surprises me as China, at the time of writing, is now the largest consumer of beer, but with 1 billion + people, that isn’t a surprise either. In the early 2010s, craft beer amounted to less than 1% of China’s beer market, but today, people are in search of new products.

So imagine my face when I came across Boxing Cat Brewery and was happy to have found something like this in a barren wasteland of craft beer. Yet it was only as I began researching them for this write up that I came across there background and later purchase by AB InBev.

Boxing Cat Brewery Xintiandi : Beer & Food Information

Boxing Cat Brewery has a number of taps of craft beer on – though no AB InBev macro beers are on tap. Strange that – I was honestly expecting some of their beers but instead everything on at Boxing Cat Brewery is brewed in-house. The beers come in three sizes : 350 ml at 40 RMB, 500 ml at 48 RMB, and then 1L at 90 RMB. There is also a 12 beer tasting set – nothing smaller is on the menu – at 256 RMB with each beer at 150 ml. Not a bad deal if you want everything and then some on the menu.

The menus were mostly in Chinese with some hints of English – enough to order and get some idea of what the beer and food is but don’t expect much conversation from the staff besides some simple one-word confirmation of beer. That’s not a slight on them, more on me, but being in a popular foreign area of Shanghai, I’d
