In A Daze Morinoza is a 5.5% pale ale from In A Daze Brewing, based in Ina, in Nagano, Japan. It’s part of their regular lineup and can be found in both cans and on draught. In A Daze Morinoza is brewed using Akamatsu, the Japanese version of a pine tree, during the mashing stages of the beer, and is hopped with Fert, Idaho 7, Polaris, and Tahoma hops. The beer takes its name from the idea of “sitting among the trees” or “mori no za” (森の座)

In A Daze Morinoza : Aroma & Taste
In A Daze Morinoza poured out a hazy dark orange colour with a thin white head on top that faded fast to leave a few bubbles around the outside of the glass. To say the aroma coming off the beer was weird would be an understatement. Akamatsu are probably a local delicacy in the area, to spice things up, but the aroma in In A Daze Morinoza was verging on unpleasant. I do like a resinous pine aroma in a beer but with this, the pine smelt bad. Combine this with a musty, oxidised aroma too, I knew that I was not going to enjoy this beer. More so as it warmed up and I got a massive diacetyl aroma from the beer too.
The body was just a mess – there was probably some idea about how to use local ingredients in In A Daze Morinoza but I really did find it undrinkable. The weird pine flavour was just not nice and it left a weird texture on the palate. There was an underlying musty, oxidised flavour going on and that was exacerbated by the diacetyl undertones in the beer. Maybe I was missing something but in the end, In A Daze Morinoza ended up down the drain.
