2nd Story Topsy is a 5% milk stout from 2nd Story Ale Works, based in Tokushima, in Shikoku, Japan. It’s part of their regular lineup and can be found in both bottles and on tap, though its availability at the time of writing is unknown. 2nd Story Topsy is named after the grandfather of Pat, the head brewer at 2nd Story Ale Works, and uses East Kent Golding hops and locally sourced coffee beans.
2nd Story Topsy Aroma and Taste
2nd Story Topsy poured out a pitch black colour with a medium amount of brownish head on top that faded fast to leave an oily ring on top of the beer. The aroma coming off 2nd Story Topsy was a rich coffee and creamy one, with the lactose bringing the milkiness to the beer. There was a smooth black malt and chocolate aroma to the beer that grew stronger as the beer warmed up.
The body was as smooth as the nose, with the coffee and creaminess being well balanced with one another, that was then followed up by the smooth black malt and chocolate flavours coming through after. After letting 2nd Story Topsy warm up, the body was thicker than expected – not a gloopy level of thickness, but definitely enough to support the flavours going on. The coffee and black malts lingered on into the aftertaste.
2nd Story Topsy The Bottom Line
2nd Story Topsy is a very tasty milk stout, worth hunting down.
