Gogoshima Lemongrass Saison : Background
Gogoshima Lemongrass Saison is a 4% saison from Gogoshima Beer Farm based on Gogoshima, in Matsuyama, Ehime. It’s part of their regular lineup, and is available in both cans and on draught. The beer is brewed using their basic saison recipe and uses lemongrass that was grown on the Gogoshima Beer Farm and also cuttings from Weeds Vegetable Garden, a natural farming company on Gogoshima Island. Finally, they used Idaho 7 and Nugget hops in the making of the beer.
The lemongrass was used in two different ways : during the boil and toward the end of fermentation. In the latter half, thye finely chopped the lemongrass with a knife and toasted it in the oven before adding it.

Gogoshima Lemongrass Saison : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste
First of all, I’m sorry for the picture! I really don’t know what happened to the colours as it seems that between this picture, and the notes that I made, they don’t match up at all.
Gogoshima Lemongrass Saison poured out a light golden colour with a thick white head on top that left some thick rings around the side of the glass – nothing as orange as the picture above shows. The aroma started off with the umistakable lemongrass aroma, before moving onto a classic saison yeast funk, just underpining it all. Though they had used some potent hops, they didn’t really shine through.
The body was light but full of flavour from both the lemongrass and the yeasty phenols that lingered under the surface during drinking. Though I had this on a winter’s day, I could imagine drinking this on a warm summer’s day, a light breeze flowing over, paired off with some grilled fish. There was a light flourish of sweetness in the end of the beer, with a dusting of wheatiness in the end.
